India Introduces ₹25,000 Monthly Allowance for Hockey Players

In a landmark move to support India’s hockey talent, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has approved a monthly out-of-pocket allowance of ₹25,000 for players selected in the national camps of both the men’s and women’s teams. The decision, finalized during the latest Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) meeting, will benefit 80 players—40 men and 40 women—starting this month.

🏑 A Long-Awaited Recognition

Historically, Indian hockey players have relied on Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) jobs, performance bonuses, and tournament prize money for income. Despite their international success, they were not previously included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) allowance structure.

“Hockey India has requested us and we have decided to accept the demand as the players have performed well at the international level,” said Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

💸 Key Highlights of the Scheme

  • Allowance Amount: ₹25,000 per month per player
  • Beneficiaries: 80 national campers (40 men + 40 women)
  • Cost to Govt: ₹20 lakh per month
  • Eligibility: Based on form and fitness, with names subject to periodic review
  • Parity: Matches the allowance given to athletes in the developmental group of TOPS

🧊 A Step Toward Financial Stability

This move is expected to reduce financial stress on players, many of whom juggle training with employment or depend on sporadic prize money from events like the Asian Games, Olympics, and Champions Trophy.

🔍 Broader Sports Push

The MOC also approved ₹4.28 crore in funding for other disciplines, with tennis players receiving the largest share. Additionally, the ministry plans to expand talent scouting through Khelo India regional centers, using social media clips to identify promising athletes from remote areas.
