Rugby Premier League Eyes IPL-Inspired Growth Model to Popularise the Sport in India

As the inaugural Rugby Premier League (RPL) gains momentum in India, industry experts believe the league can take a strategic cue from the Indian Premier League (IPL) to build a sustainable and fan-driven ecosystem for rugby. With sold-out matches, celebrity endorsements, and major brand partnerships, the RPL is positioning itself as the next big thing in India’s evolving sports landscape.

🏉 Rugby’s Rise: From Grassroots to Prime Time

Despite limited urban awareness, rugby is played in over 322 districts across India, according to Rugby India President Rahul Bose. The RPL, launched by Rugby India and GMR Sports, features six franchises—Delhi Redz, Hyderabad Heroes, Bengaluru Bravehearts, Mumbai Dreamers, Kalinga Black Tigers, and Chennai Bulls—and is being broadcast on JioStar with support from sponsors like Dream11, Amul, HSBC, and Hero Fincorp.

“Rugby is played in over 120 countries and has all the ingredients to become a great sports entertainment property,” said Satyam Trivedi, CEO of GMR Sports.

📺 What Rugby Can Learn from the IPL

Experts suggest the RPL can emulate the IPL’s success by focusing on:

  • Regional branding and local rivalries
  • Player auctions and marquee international signings
  • Strong digital campaigns featuring stars like Abhishek Bachchan and Sunil Chhetri
  • Community engagement to build grassroots loyalty
  • Creating aspirational Indian icons to inspire the next generation

🌟 The Road Ahead

While the RPL has made a promising start, sustained success will depend on long-term investment, consistent storytelling, and fan education. With the final match scheduled for June 29, all eyes are on whether the league can convert curiosity into lasting fandom.
