Two-Time Olympic Medallist Lalit Upadhyay Announces Retirement from International Hockey

Veteran Indian hockey forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay has officially announced his retirement from international hockey, bringing the curtain down on a decorated decade-long career that saw him become a two-time Olympic bronze medallist and one of India’s most consistent performers.

🏑 From Varanasi to Olympic Glory

Hailing from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Lalit made his senior debut in 2014 and went on to represent India in 183 international matches, scoring 67 goals. He was a key figure in India’s historic bronze medal wins at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, ending a 41-year Olympic medal drought for Indian men’s hockey.

“This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams,” Lalit wrote in an emotional social media post. “From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice — it’s been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride.”
