AUS vs WI 1st Test: Smith Injured, Labuschagne Dropped as Australia Reshuffle XI

Australia began their 2025–27 World Test Championship campaign against West Indies in Barbados without two of their most experienced batters—Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne—marking the first time since 2018 that neither featured in a Test XI.

Why Steve Smith Is Missing

Smith was ruled out due to a finger injury sustained during the WTC final against South Africa. The 36-year-old suffered a compound dislocation while fielding in the slips and is currently undergoing recovery. Cricket Australia’s chief selector George Bailey confirmed that Smith needs more time to heal and will be reassessed ahead of the second Test.

Why Marnus Labuschagne Was Dropped

Labuschagne’s omission stems from a prolonged dip in form. Despite being the second-highest run-scorer in WTC history, he managed just 593 runs in 13 Tests since 2024 at an average of 26.95, with his last century dating back to 2023. His poor showing in the WTC final—scores of 17 and 22—prompted selectors to give others a chance.

“Marnus at his best can be an important member of this team. He understands his output hasn’t been at the level we, or he, expects,” said Bailey.

Who Replaces Them?

  • Sam Konstas, the 19-year-old opener, returns to the XI after debuting during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
  • Josh Inglis, who scored a century on debut against Sri Lanka, replaces Smith at No. 4.

The new-look top order now features Usman Khawaja, Konstas, Cameron Green at No. 3, and Inglis at No. 4.
