The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has come under intense scrutiny as players and managers voice growing frustration over substandard pitch conditions across U.S. venues. From “ball bouncing like a rabbit” to “pitches like a sauna,” the criticism has sparked concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will also be hosted in the United States.
Enrique, Bellingham, Kovac Lead the Backlash
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique was among the first to lash out after his team’s 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field, saying, “I wouldn’t imagine an NBA court full of holes. The ball bounces almost like if it were jumping around like a rabbit.” He noted that the temporary natural grass laid over former artificial turf dried out within minutes, disrupting PSG’s rhythm.
Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham echoed the sentiment, calling the pitches “tough on the knees” and warning that they “hold up the ball” and affect player balance. Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac went further, likening the playing surface to a “sauna” due to the oppressive heat and poor turf quality.
World Cup Venues Under the Microscope
Five Club World Cup venues—Lumen Field, MetLife Stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, and Lincoln Financial Field—are also scheduled to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The current backlash has raised alarms about player safety, match quality, and FIFA’s preparedness for the global showpiece.
Turf Troubles Not New
The issue isn’t isolated. During last year’s Copa America, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez called the pitches a “disaster,” while Peru coach Jorge Fossati criticized the use of imported grass, which lacks natural growth and resilience.
“It’s not grass that’s born and grows. It’s brought in from elsewhere, making it harder and less forgiving,” Fossati explained.
FIFA Under Pressure to Act
With billions invested and global stars on display, FIFA faces mounting pressure to upgrade pitch standards before the World Cup. Players and fans alike are demanding safe, consistent, and high-quality surfaces that reflect the prestige of the tournament.
