India’s women’s football team kicked off their AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifying campaign in emphatic fashion, thrashing Mongolia 13-0 in Chiang Mai on June 23. Despite the historic win—India’s biggest-ever victory in an official AFC match—head coach Crispin Chettri believes the Blue Tigresses can still raise their game.
“We Can Be Much Better,” Says Chettri
While the scoreline marked the fourth-largest win in India’s women’s football history, Chettri emphasized that the team must remain focused on clinical execution and tactical discipline.
“Sometimes, you don’t have to look at scorelines. We must be more professional and finish whatever chances come our way. We can be much better, I know,” he said.
Pyari Xaxa and Grace Dangmei Shine
India took time to settle, scoring just four goals in the first half. But the second half saw a goal-fest, led by Pyari Xaxa, who netted five of the first six goals, with three assists from Grace Dangmei. Soumya Guguloth’s stunning left-footed volley and Rimpa Haldar’s relentless wing play added flair to the dominant display.
Substitutes Make Impact
Second-half substitutes Malavika and Priyadharshini Selladurai also found the net, showcasing India’s bench strength. Chettri praised the team’s improved ball movement and composure in the latter half.
Eyes on Thailand Clash
With only the group winner qualifying for the main tournament in Australia, India’s final group match against hosts Thailand on July 5 could be decisive. Before that, they face Timor-Leste on June 29, who drew 0-0 with Iraq in their opener.
“We want more composure in midfield, more shots from outside the box, and more variation in attack,” Chettri added, outlining the team’s focus areas ahead of the next match.
