Faith Kipyegon’s Historic Bid: Can She Shatter the 4-Minute Mile Barrier?

Kenya’s middle-distance queen Faith Kipyegon is poised to make history as she attempts to become the first woman to run a sub-four-minute mile on June 26, 2025, at the Stade Charléty in Paris. The event, dubbed “Breaking4”, mirrors Eliud Kipchoge’s iconic sub-two-hour marathon challenge and is backed by Nike, featuring cutting-edge gear and a team of pacemakers to optimize conditions.

The Challenge: Breaking a 71-Year-Old Gender Barrier

Kipyegon currently holds the women’s mile world record at 4:07.64, set in Monaco in 2023. To break the four-minute barrier, she must shave off over seven seconds, or roughly two seconds per lap—a monumental task in elite athletics.

“I think breaking four will really cement my legacy,” Kipyegon said, emphasizing her desire to inspire the next generation.

Tech-Backed Attempt in a Controlled Environment

The race will not be officially recognized by World Athletics due to the use of non-standard equipment and strategic pacing. Kipyegon will wear aerodynamic apparel, super-light spikes, and run behind five pacemakers arranged to reduce wind resistance by up to 70%, mimicking the conditions that helped Kipchoge break his barrier in 2019.

From Barefoot to Breaking Barriers

Kipyegon’s journey from running barefoot in rural Kenya to becoming a three-time Olympic gold medalist and multiple world record holder is already legendary. Her attempt to break the four-minute mile is not just about speed—it’s about legacy, empowerment, and pushing the limits of human performance.

What’s at Stake?

While the time won’t be ratified as an official world record, a successful run would redefine the boundaries of women’s middle-distance running and place Kipyegon alongside the likes of Roger Bannister, who broke the men’s four-minute mile in 1954.
