Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy has openly criticized the decision to promote Cameron Green to the No.3 batting position in the ongoing Test series against West Indies, calling the move “bemusing” and technically flawed. Green, who returned to the squad after a long injury layoff, managed just 3 runs in the first innings at Bridgetown, falling to debutant Shamar Joseph.
Healy: “Green’s Technique Not Suited for No.3”
Speaking on SEN Radio, Healy questioned Pat Cummins’ endorsement of Green as a long-term No.3, stating:
“Cam Green is swishing too hard across the line and getting caught in slips. He needs to play straighter with the full face of the bat.”
Healy also pointed out that Nathan McSweeney had previously been earmarked for the No.3 role and suggested the selectors may have overlooked a more natural fit.
Australia’s Top Order Under Fire
Green’s promotion came amid a reshuffle that saw Marnus Labuschagne dropped and Steve Smith sidelined due to injury. The new-look top order—Sam Konstas, Green, and Josh Inglis—managed just 11 runs combined, raising concerns about Australia’s batting depth.
Cricket analyst Robert Craddock echoed Healy’s concerns, saying:
“Green plays with hard hands outside off stump. That’s treacherous for a No.3.”
What’s Next for Green?
Despite the criticism, Green remains a key all-rounder in Australia’s setup. However, with the Ashes looming later this year, selectors may need to reconsider his batting position to stabilize the top order.
