The family of an Arizona State University hockey athlete who experienced a sudden collapse during an outdoor training session last month is actively requesting administrative suspension for the coaching staff. The demand calls for the relevant coaches to step away from their duties while an objective, independent inquiry takes place regarding the incident.

Background of the Incident

The athlete at the center of the situation is Matthew Mayich, a member of the collegiate hockey program. During a conditioning workout held outdoors last month, Mayich suffered a medical emergency and collapsed. The unexpected health crisis has raised serious questions among family members regarding safety protocols and oversight during strenuous athletic activities in outdoor environments.

Call for Administrative Leave

In response to the alarming event, the parents of the student-athlete have formally requested that the university place the coaching staff on temporary leave. According to the family, this step is essential to ensure that a thorough and unbiased review can be conducted without any potential influence or interference from individuals currently leading the program. They emphasize that accountability and transparency are paramount when dealing with the health and safety of college athletes.

University Response and Next Steps

As public pressure mounts following the incident, stakeholders and athletic department officials face mounting scrutiny over the training conditions and immediate response protocols utilized during the outdoor workout. The university has yet to announce a final decision regarding the administrative status of the coaches while the independent investigation remains ongoing. The primary focus for all involved parties continues to be understanding the exact sequence of events that led to the medical emergency and determining what preventive measures should be implemented moving forward.
