Arizona State University hockey coach Greg Powers has been placed on paid administrative leave. This action follows a recent incident where several members of the hockey team formally requested his removal. The request came as the university began looking into the circumstances surrounding a teammate’s sudden collapse during a workout session.

Investigation Background and Team Concerns

The decision to place the head coach on leave arrives only days after student-athletes approached university administration. Their primary concern centered on demanding his removal while an active inquiry investigates the medical emergency involving one of their fellow players. Educational institutions take player safety and welfare matters with extreme seriousness, prompting swift administrative responses when internal grievances arise regarding physical training protocols.

Institutional Response and Next Steps

University officials have not yet released extensive details regarding the ongoing review of the workout session. Paid administrative leave is a standard procedure used by academic and athletic institutions to conduct thorough, unbiased investigations without interference from key personnel. As the inquiry continues, school representatives will evaluate the findings to determine appropriate future actions for the hockey program and its coaching staff.

Impact on the Arizona State Hockey Program

With the season approaching, the sudden absence of the head coach introduces significant challenges for the athletic department and the student-athletes. Leadership transitions during active investigations require careful management to ensure minimal disruption to player training and academic responsibilities. The university remains focused on addressing player concerns transparently while maintaining the integrity and safety standards of all varsity sports programs.
