Manchester City’s rising star Claudio Echeverri has sparked injury concerns after being spotted on crutches and wearing a protective boot following his full debut in the 6-0 Club World Cup win over Al Ain. The 19-year-old Argentine, who scored a stunning free-kick in the first half, was substituted at halftime due to a twisted right ankle.
Dream Debut Turns Sour
Echeverri’s first start for City was off to a dream start as he curled in a spectacular free-kick to double the lead. However, a collision with Al Ain midfielder Yahia Nader in the 15th minute left him limping. Though he played out the half, the discomfort forced manager Pep Guardiola to replace him with Phil Foden at the break.
“He’s an incredible player in small spaces,” Guardiola said. “But he was a bit sore and couldn’t continue”.
Injury Update and Tournament Impact
City’s medical team is currently assessing the extent of the injury. Echeverri has missed training sessions and is ruled out of the Group G decider against Juventus in Orlando. There are fears he could miss the remainder of the tournament, depending on recovery timelines.
A Blow to City’s Midfield Depth
Signed from River Plate in January 2024 and officially joining the squad in February 2025, Echeverri had been touted as a key figure in Guardiola’s evolving midfield. His injury comes at a time when City is already managing squad rotation and fitness ahead of the European season.
